SWEET SUPPORT
Melody
Sweet started the Hucclecote Card-making Group in 2001
after a year of raising funds to buy a guillotine.
Melody is standing in between the 2 ladies seated,
with members of her card-making group
From the start they wanted to sell
the cards they were making so as well as learning to
make a good quality card in quantity they also had to
find their customers.
The group raised over £1000 in their first year
which really spurred them on and they decided to try
to raise more each year. They’ve achieved their
aims admirably with total sales to date amounting to
£12,260.00.
They supply various outlets and attend
table top sales, fetes and shows, mostly in the Hucclecote,
Gloucester area and each November hold a big Christmas
Sale in Hucclecote which generally brings in £250-£300.
Melody’s group had wonderful support and encouragement
right from the start from The Mews retirement complex
in Hucclecote where Melody is Warden. Her husband Roy
is also involved, to begin with he did all the guillotine
work until the quantity became too much so it’s
now shared amongst the group. “The core members
of the group are residents and we also sell an enormous
number of cards here to our residents so the Mews is
very involved we are also lucky to have Mrs Doreen Morehen
who knits a variety of lovely items which contributes
to our income” says Melody.
The group of twelve members meet about once a month
on a Saturday morning for a hectic two hours but it’s
always a great deal of fun because after five years
they all still enjoy each others company. It’s
a time for bringing work in and collecting more, sorting
bags of cards that have been donated, bringing in money
from sales and collecting more cards.
The cards are made in the member’s
homes and are then brought to Roy and Melody for the
final trim and quality control.
Melody added “I am delighted
we have raised funds to aid the fight against this dreadful
disease and to have enjoyed doing it is a bonus. My
aim is to keep my group motivated enough so we can continue
our work for the Cobalt Appeal Fund Crack Cancer Campaign
long into the future. So come on everyone if we can
do it so can you!”
