What is MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging provides crystal clear sectional pictures of the human body. This technique has been used since the early 1980's.

As MRI uses magnets and radio waves there is no potentially harmful radiation. It is considered to be a very safe imaging technique.

The highly detailed pictures are excellent at differentiating between abnormal and normal tissues. The images can be taken in any direction and angle through the human body, giving doctors a clearer picture of any abnormalities.

MRI offers speedy, early diagnosis.

How Does It Work?

The scanner uses a strong magnetic field which has an effect on the atoms of the human body. With the use of radio waves the atoms emit a signal which is collected and interpreted as different tissues by the computer.

MRI is not invasive and does not use x-rays.

There are no known harmful effects and so it can be used repeatedly.

How Can It Help Me?

MRI assesses all parts of the body, it can clearly demonstrate every type of structure, this includes skin, bone, muscles, tendons/ligaments and cartilages, nerves and blood vessels.

Why Use Different Scanners?

We are a unique diagnostic centre in that we are able to offer clinical scanning at a variety of magnetic strengths (measured in Teslas), on different magnets and fields (vertical and horizontal). We currently utilise a High Field OPEN Panorama, 3.0 Tesla Achieva, 1.5 Tesla Achieva and 1.5 Tesla Intera. Our scanners receive software and hardware upgrades regularly to incorporate new technologies.

All referrals are seen by our Superintendents and Consultants where appropriate, prior to booking, to ensure your referral is directed toward a scanner which will offer you the best possible pictures, in the fastest time. It is important to be able to scan people quickly as most patients find it impossible to lie still for very long periods, and unfortunately MR images are badly affected by movement – rather like a photograph.

There are many reasons for directing work towards a certain MR system including required resolution, field of view, speed, isocentric imaging, tissue saturation, body area, claustrophobia, comfort and of course referrer or patient choice. Please be assured that we are experts in MRI and will be looking to take scans in the most appropriate way to aid diagnosis.

Who Takes and Reads My Pictures?

All of our imaging is undertaken by specialist staff, MRI State Registered Radiographers. They work under the direction of an MRI Consultant Radiologist who will report your pictures.

We use very experienced Consultant Radiologists who have anatomical and disease specific regions of interest, eg Musculo-Skeletal, Neurological, Oncology, Breast, Paediatric, etc.

All our Consultants are NHS based within the UK and work closely with us from our centre.
