MRI - How to be Referred

  How to be Referred

Lady with clipboardYou must have somebody who can manage your care and so we ask for a referral, detailing your problem and any relevant history - this can be from your Consultant, GP, Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, Osteopath or other clinical practitioner. Upon receipt of your referral by post, fax or online, our Clinical Director or Senior Superintendent Radiographers will assign your referral to a specialist disease specific Consultant Radiologist. They will be in charge of your examination and ensure your referral is protocolled with the sequences (di fferent sets of pictures) to best demonstrate any abnormality within the area to be scanned, on the most appropriate scanner.

Our staff will then contact you to arrange an appointment and talk through our safety screening questionnaire to ensure you have no contra-indication to MRI. They will also explain or send to you any other information, such as a map or confirmation letter.

Envelope used for MRI scansUsually after your scan the images will be formatted and printed and given to you in a heavy duty envelope, so that they are immediately available to your referrer when you return to them for your results. This ensures there are no delays to your follow-up treatment plan through loss or postage delays. We will then forward a detailed report from the specialist disease specific Consultant Radiologist to your referrer. There can be over a hundred images to look at with MRI and the report must be dictated, typed, checked and posted or faxed by request. Therefore we ask for one week to get your report back to your referring practitioner. Please always feel free to talk to us about urgent appointments. If you are able to give us a fax number for your referrer this will shorten receipt of the results. Faxed results are always followed up by a posted report.

CD for MRI scansIf required we can also provide your images on a CD with a dicom viewer installed, to look at and manipulate all the images. This requires ActiveX during playback, so the PC which you view the images on must be connected to the internet at the time of loading. This additional service is available for an extra £22 at the time of your scan, or plus postage afterwards.

Be assured that we also keep archives of all our patients MR images. If you need films reprinted or a CD in the future we should be able to retrieve these for you and will explain any costs involved.
